Angels Carol, a Christmas carol by the Ruth Education Centre choir
This festive season, we invite you to listen to Angels Carol, a beautiful Christmas Carol sung by refugees from Myanmar.
The Ruth Milal Choir comprises of students from the Ruth Education Centre (REC). Located in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, the REC is a secondary school which also trains refugees from Myanmar to be teachers. A number of the REC students go on to obtain employment at the Learning Centres run by the refugee communities. Westgate Refugee Support assists with teacher training and supports the volunteer teachers from REC.
Most of the REC students are Chin people, an ethnic minority group from Myanmar. Music and singing are central to Chin culture.
The REC is a residential school and music was always a part of the life of the community as well as being part of the student’s curriculum. With the leadership of Pastor Michael Moey, the Principal of REC, the choir formally came together in early 2016.
The choir has about 50 members, practices three times a week and sing at events most weeks. The choir regularly sings at cultural celebrations, church services, weddings and non-government organisation events.
The choir has built a well deserved reputation for their music. We hope it brings you some joy this Christmas.
